M:I am sorry,traffic was a bit heavier than I expected.

W:I’ve been waiting here for more than twenty minutes.I was about to leave.

M:But it’s only ten past eight;I am only ten minutes late.

W:Actually I normally arrive a bit early.I don’t like to be late.

M:It’s common practice here to be a bit early,or a bit late.Sometimes sticking to an exact time is a bit impractical.When the Chinese make an appointment,the time frame can be a bit hazy.And we always catch up with one another.

W:Hmm.In the west,8 o’clock is 8 o’clock.People will usually try to arrive early rather than late.Well,no hard feelings.

M:Next time I’ll try to be on time.

W:Next time I will try to be more understanding.

W:In our English class today,we studied the months of the year.Ms Parks said that we knew our lessons and that we were excellent.

M:Do you speak only English in class or does your teacher explain everything to you in Spanish?

W:Oh,no.We never speak Spanish in class!Ms Parks speaks to us only in English.Sometimes it is difficult to understand her,but she wants us to become used to hearing English.

M:I suppose she is right.Does she speak English very slowly?

W:Not always.Sometimes we don’t understand her.Then she has to repeat what she says.

M:It must be interesting to study English.

W:I am the best student in the class.Ms Parks says that my pronunciation is very good.

M:Is English pronunciation easy or difficult?

W:Sometimes it is very difficult.Some words look different from the way one pronounces them.

M:The cinema was in total darkness when we went in and it was no easy matter making our way to our seats.

The old man who had come in ahead of us was luckier;he had a stick to help him find his way,like a blind man.“It’s very funny not to have any lights on before the film starts,” I commented.

“And no music,either,”added my husband.“

Well,perhaps they are saving money?”

We were in one of the rows nearest the entrance.We heard others pass by but we could not tell how big the audience was.Obviously,however,the cinema did not get very crowded at that time of day.

“It must be two o’clock already,”my husband said,getting restless.“Can you see your watch?”

My eyes had now grown accustomed to the darkness and by bringing my watch close to my eyes,I could just make out that it was a little after two.

Just then the program started.But we were disappointed to find that there had been a change.The second of the two films,which we were not interested in seeing,was being shown first.
